New Generations is a residential treatment program for women who have a substance use disorder and/or co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders. The program offers additional specialized services for pregnant and parenting women and their children. A woman may bring one child up to age four with her into the program. Upon delivery, a woman may bring her newborn into the program.

Residential treatment includes:

  • Individual, group and family therapy
  • Psychiatric services
  • Medication and case management, and
  • Continuing care services to help with the family’s transition back to the community.

New Generations also provides parenting education and on-site child care. The babies and children receive appropriate vaccinations and routine medical checkups. Mothers receive help to find employment and housing before leaving the program.

The mothers and their children generally stay approximately four months at the main location and then approximately another three months in an apartment-based re-entry program. Once they are living on their own with their child, they continue to receiving services on an outpatient basis for another six months.

The program has been a partnership between the Fairfax-Falls Church Community Services Board and Christian Relief Services for more than two decades.

The services provided at New Generations help women and mothers make lasting, positive changes. By improving birth outcomes and strengthening families, the program can change the entire trajectory of a child’s life.
